Last month I had a privilege of speaking at high school seniors of Valley High School in Santa Ana, CA. On the surface, this was a typical Southern California high school, with busy schedule and students getting ready for their final exams before heading to colleges and looking for jobs. However, there was something very different about these seniors.
Unlike many of their peers across the country, these students have been a part of a special pilot project of preparing them for “real world” jobs and entrepreneurial businesses, called Global Business Academy! As a part of this business preparedness program, once a month they invited business experts and entrepreneurs to speak to them about business and how to succeed.
When I teach Diamond Mind, I usually have a day workshop or a several months-long program, so I thought “What can I share with them in mere 45 minutes that would give them value? How can I teach them tools in such a short session?” I decided that perhaps my personal story of coming to the US with no resources or speaking English, and eventually finding my purpose and building a business that I love. I also wanted to give them at least a taste of Diamond Mind Focused Meditation and share with them how it can empower them in their careers and lives.
I must admit, I was a bit apprehensive – while I’ve been teaching Diamond Mind for the past 23 years to young adults and professionals, teaching it to younger teens was relatively new to me. I thought “How would school kids react to learning meditation to help them with career and business success?” Somewhere in the back of my mind I was afraid to be met with rolled eyes and bored glances at smart phones… Contrary to my fears, the students were engaged and appeared to soak in every word. I saw a genuine interest, the light in their eyes and nodding in realization and agreement.
Today, almost a month to date from my presentation at Valley High, I finally received their feedback letters. And again, I was a bit apprehensive opening up the envelope. I armed myself with cookies and told myself – “Brace yourself for brutal honesty of teenagers… and use their critique to improve. If I managed to inspire at least one of these kids, it was worth the trouble.”
When I open the envelope, I have found 35 Thank You letters, expressing gratitude, telling how much they were inspired by my story and how our even a short session of Diamond Mind Meditation raised their energy, calmed them down and started an uncommonly happy day. Many said that the meditation that I taught them was very different from their ideas of what meditation was and that they looked forward to make it part of their lives as they move onto colleges, jobs and businesses.
While I was trying to inspire and encourage them, their positive feedback inspired and encouraged me to pursue implementing Diamond Mind YOUTH Program in our schools!
I will end this post with a couple of excerpts from their letters:
“The short example of meditation that you showed us where you had us touch our energy center and listen to music while we had our eyes closed, really cleared my mind and helped me concentrate more in class. I felt like my mind was cleared of emotions and problems. I learned a lot from you and in the future I will try meditating to help my life.”

“When you told us that we needed to be congruent with who we are to develop inner skills we all need to reach our fullest potential, I thought it had to do with something like writing or studying… I never thought Meditation was basically the answer. That was really inspiring to know how something so small can change someone forever.”
Martha M. Business Academy, Valley High School.
“I agree with you, I think everyone in school should at least have 15 minutes twice a day of meditation to change everyone’s attitude about each day of their life.”
Yesenia S. Business Academy, Valley High School.
